Thermoguard Intumecent Paints

Timbercoat Intumescent Paint - Fire Test - TV Demo

Timbercoat is an intumescent paint used on bare timber or previously painted surfaces to retard the spread of flames. A protective insulating barrier, in the form of a deep char, forms on exposure to fire.

Timbercoat's fire protection and fire retarding properties were demonstrated in the Megastructures TV documentary Building from Disaster showing lessons learned from the fatal Bradford FC fire in the development of sports stadiums.

The Thermocoat fire test starts at the 03:12 minute mark on the video: click on the image below to begin.

Three panels, cut from the same timber, were tested in parallel. One was unprotected, one was painted and one was Timbercoat protected. The first two panels were shown to burn through completely within as little as 6 mins.

At the end of the test the Timbercoat panel was not burned through, as the other panels were, and the back of the Timbercoated panel could be touched bare-handed, even with the flame source still active.

Charring on the Timbercoat panel was restricted to 2mm, retaining integrity and insulation throughout a 45 min maximum severity burn (more severe than BS 476 part 22).

To satisfy the demands of fire protection and decor Timbercoat can be overcoated with Thermoguard flame retardant paint finishes that will not 'flashover' like many conventional paints.
